Tailor-Made Solutions at the Edge of the Sea

At Kvalnes on Andøya, Andfjord Salmon is building one of the world’s most unique aquaculture facilities – featuring large pools below sea level with natural water flow. Atlantic salmon is already being produced here with minimal environmental impact and the highest possible standards of animal welfare.

Cflow and Andfjord Salmon optimize production and fish welfare

Land-based Aquaculture

To fully realize the potential of the facility, a customized logistics and handling system is essential. In phase one at Kvalnes, Cflow is delivering a gentle transport system that Andfjord Salmon highlights as a key factor for both fish welfare and production capacity.

A Facility Like No Other

“We needed a solution that could optimizeour concept – and that meant something entirely different from standard systems,” says Martin Rasmussen, CEO of Andfjord Salmon.

“We have large units, lots of water, and high flow rates. At the same time, we want to move the fish without stress and on its own terms.”

The solution was developed in collaboration with Cflow – a partnership that has lasted for several years, built on mutual trust, shared ambitions, and technical insight.

“Cflow understood early on what we wanted to achieve and has delivered both expertise and presence,” Rasmussen says.

Moving Fish Without Lifting

Andfjord Salmon has built its pools below sea level, offering unique advantages in terms of water pressure and natural flow.

“The system we’ve developed with Cflow allows us to move the fish extremely gently, without any operations that require lifting,” says Rasmussen.

The solution is not only gentle – it’s also highly efficient. With phase one at Kvalnes, Andfjord Salmon can move fish between units during the production cycle.

“There’s a big difference between keeping fish in one tank the whole way and being able to distribute it where it best fits the production. It gives us greater flexibility and better utilization of capacity.”

Simple and Robust

“The complexity of the facility is high. That’s why the solution must be simple. We’ve chosen to keep the principles straight forward, reducing risk and ensuring predictability,” Rasmussen explains.

The system is custom-developed for Andfjord Salmon – not an off-the-shelf product. It’s the result of continuous collaboration, technical adjustments, and practical evaluations.

“Cflow has shown the ability to support us all the way – not just in design, but also in execution and preparations for operations.”

A Unique Drive

And it’s not just about technology. Rasmussen emphasizes the human collaboration that determines whether a project succeeds:

“You need a partner who can stand with you through challenges – and who has the will to make it work.”

“Cflow has a unique drive in their organization. We want a partner who genuinely wants us to succeed together. That’s been absolutely essential, because then you contribute more than just what’s written in the contract.”

Built for the Future

With Cflow, Andfjord Salmon has found a partner that combines technical expertise with the ability to be present throughout the journey – from the first drawing to the first fish being moved.

Now, Andfjord Salmon is ready to take the next step. As phase one begins production, the system will prove its value – not just in gentle handling, but also in capacity, efficiency, and reliability.

“We’re confident the system will perform asexpected – and maybe even better,” concludes Martin Rasmussen, CEO of Andfjord Salmon.
